One of the most successful songwriters and composers of the last 25 years, Steve Dorff has penned over 20 "Top 10" hits for pop and country artists around the world, including Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Blake Shelton, Smokey Robinson, Kenny Rogers, Ray Charles, Anne Murray, Whitney Houston, George Strait, Dolly Parton, Judy Collins, Cher, Dusty Springfield, Ringo Starr, and Garth Brooks. He has scored for television shows, including Growing Pains, Major Dad, Murder She Wrote, Reba, and several films, including Any Which Way but Loose for which he penned the titular song, and more recently, he has embarked on Broadway (forthcoming musical Josephine).

Chronicling his four decades behind the music, Steve Dorff gives anecdotes, advice, and insights into his journey. The book follows Steve from his childhood in Queens to Manhattan to Nashville and to his eventual arrival in Los Angeles, California.

Oftentimes, songs are attributed to the singers who perform them, but it is the songwriter who really knows the story behind the story, from conception to execution. Full of heartfelt stories, hard-earned wisdom, and delightful wit, I Wrote That One, Too... is a great book for musicians, music fans, and whoever has chased their dreams and survived the surprising, but often serendipitous, turns in the road.

"I was blown away by this beautifully written memoir. Each story was more interesting than the next. My favorite stories included Dusty Springfield, Ringo Starr and the fascinating story behind the theme song of Growing Pains. Dorff's literary style is engaging, funny and accessible. I loved the short chapters and found myself racing through this fast paced book. This is a story about grit and chutzpah and not giving up on one's dream. Dorff's laconic and wry observational storytelling is accessible and left me wanting to know more."

  • There is a conversational style to the writing of this book that makes it feel like the author is talking directly to you. The journey that Steve has taken laid bare here, and it’s fascinating. The stories behind the songs are engaging and entertaining. From being visited by the FBI because his name was found written on a list by a famous serial killer, to the time he was asked to vamp on a recording for a young Motown group that may have been their biggest hit, you’ll have a hard time putting this book down. Chances are, you know lots of Steve Dorff songs. This book lets us know about Steve himself. It’s a great read.
  • Great stories about great songs and a life in music. Some funny, some amazing, some just great behind the scenes stuff.
  • A fascinating behind-the scenes look at the world of song writing. I loved the personal stories. It was amazing to read all that goes into getting a song made. Freedman and Dorff pair well as a writing team!
  • A fantastic book. Highly recommend reading about this brilliant artist

  • Steve is such a talented songwriter and I was happy to know that he finally wrote a book about his songs and his world.

  • I don’t usually love biographies and this was the exception as it felt more like an engaging conversation with a down to earth guy who had a story to tell. And it’s a fairly incredible story. After reading this book, you definitely want to meet/know the “man behind the curtain.” I loved every anecdote from Kenny Rogers mismanaged lyrics to Dusty Springfield’s behavior in the studio to the real story behind Blake Shelton being asked to be Barbra Streisand’s duet partner. The book is graceful, funny and smart. I could not put it down. The writing is highly accessible and paced perfectly and it really allows the reader into the complicated, witty and fascinating mind of Steve Dorff.
