Between the World and Me TaNehisi Coates 8601423687360 Books Reviews

  • I'm white, male, and have very little understanding or appreciation for black culture. My parents and siblings all watched Roots when I was about 8 years old. I encountered some black sailors when I was in the U.S. Navy - in fact, I had a roommate for six months or so that was a black male, but we maybe spoke a hundred words during that time. This book came recommended by a quasi-stranger, not for it's content but for its structure letters from a father to a son. I'd mentioned that I was interested in writing that sort of book, and this was a resulting recommendation. I read a few reviews before buying it. Not the sort of book I'd otherwise pick up. After ordering it, I heard the author on NPR - without knowing it was the author of the book, mind you - and I thought "wow, this guy is really interesting, provocative, well-spoken, intellectually sound, and speaks from a world that I can only see from afar." So when the show host said his name, I knew I had to pick up the book and read it soon. I had that opportunity within days, on a flight to Atlanta, my first visit there in maybe fifteen years. I got through about 110 pages on the flight and it was perfect timing. Atlanta is a sea of black compared to most everywhere I've lived. Instantly, I could try and appreciate my surroundings in way that I'd never been able to before. Did I feel "white guilt"? Sure. I do. I've seen racism my whole life, especially toward black. This book, however, did much more than rekindle strong feelings of being a winner of Powerball proportions in the life lottery. It challenged me so fundamentally and starkly in a way that I have never been challenged, reading a book, in my life. At times I felt compelled to put the book down, that it was just conjuring up too much weight of history that I wanted to put back out of sight. But I kept going. Finishing it, I felt, like apparently many others do, that this should be required reading for every American. Even those outside of the USA will benefit from it, as it will certainly illuminate the tension and schizophrenia and contradictions and rewritten history of our country. I hope Mr. Coates continues writing until he draws his final breath.
  • Like many of the one- and two- star reviewers of this book, I bristled at certain passages in Between the World and Me. I felt attacked and blamed at times, because I, in Ta-Nehisi Coates' words, "believe that I am white." So I understand the scorn directed at this book by many who dismiss it as divisive and simplistic in its assessment of the black experience in America.

But here's the thing this book isn't about me. It's not trying to tell me what I should do to be a better person or make me feel guilty about things I don't even understand, much less control. It's not trying to fix anything. And if you're reading it that way, I think you're missing a profound experience.

I've never been shown and made to understood the experience of a life so unlike my own as I have with this book. I felt the frustration and fear that Mr. Coates felt growing up black in America. I felt the anger he feels at people who believe that they are white dismissing that experience as so many sour grapes. I felt the hypocrisy of being told not to wear hoodies or play loud music for fear of someone breaking your body.

That's why this book matters. It's not a solution to our race problems or an accurate assessment of the progress of America as a nation. It is not a book about white people and how we should change. It is simply a powerful testament of one man's experience, and an offering of understanding.

I grew up rich, white and privileged in suburban Virginia. I never had to think about my safety, my future or my pride through the lens of my race. I couldn't even begin to conceive of that experience. Ta-Nehisi Coates is the first person to break through that reality of my upbringing and allow me to step into another experience for a little while.

    It was life-changing and important.
  • I read this book today in one sitting. I do not think I could easily describe exactly what it is, but I'll try. This is a book black people need to read. This is a book white people need to read. This is a book that anyone who calls themselves "American" needs to read. This is a book that writers need to read. This is a book that describes the history of our nation and -- in a way -- the history of the world. This is a book that tells one man's story of how he achieved his social consciousness the impact that had on how he viewed himself.

Coates uses his youth, his journey into manhood, his personal tragedies and his struggle to find his voice as a writer as a vehicle to reflect on what it means to be a black male in America. The book is crafted as a letter to his son, making it a more intimate and personal journey. That intimacy and humanization extends beyond Coates to the victims and survivors of racism. Coates forces to you reflect on the individuality, potential and preciousness of every life impacted by the Middle Passage, Bloody Sunday or killer cops.

He is not optimistic, but he's not a cynic, either. I was worried that this book would leave me feeling sad, angry, hurt. Instead, I feel strangely proud. He sees where we fail as a nation, but points out how black people have and will continue to survive as a people. And he calls on those who have benefited from America's systemic racism to do better or face their own future downfall.

To sum it up, Toni Morrison describes this book best "This is required reading."

The blockbuster hit - A New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly best seller.

For fans of Orphan Train and The Nightingale comes a "thought-provoking [and] complex tale about two families, two generations apart...based on a notorious true-life scandal". (Library Journal)

Memphis, 1939. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings live a magical life aboard their family's Mississippi River shantyboat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night, Rill is left in charge - until strangers arrive in force. Wrenched from all that is familiar and thrown into a Tennessee Children's Home Society orphanage, the Foss children are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents - but they quickly realize the dark truth. At the mercy of the facility's cruel director, Rill fights to keep her sisters and brother together in a world of danger and uncertainty.

Aiken, South Carolina, present day. Born into wealth and privilege, Avery Stafford seems to have it all a successful career as a federal prosecutor, a handsome fiancé, and a lavish wedding on the horizon. But when Avery returns home to help her father weather a health crisis, a chance encounter leaves her with uncomfortable questions and compels her to take a journey through her family's long-hidden history, on a path that will ultimately lead either to devastation or to redemption.

Based on one of America's most notorious real-life scandals - in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country - Lisa Wingate's riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong.

Publishers Weekly's number three longest-running best seller of 2017.

Winner of the Southern Book Prize.

If All Arkansas Read the Same Book selection.

"A [story] of a family lost and found...a poignant, engrossing tale about sibling love and the toll of secrets." (People)

"Sure to be one of the most compelling books you pick up this year.... Wingate is a master-storyteller, and you'll find yourself pulled along as she reveals the wake of terror and heartache that is Georgia Tann's legacy." (Parade)

"This is a REAL story. It is poignant, sad, unbelievable and a must read to learn about how families were destroyed and children were mistreated in orphanages prior to 1950. The way children were stolen and placed in homes under cruel caretakers is chilling. Children were stolen, warehoused in homes until they could be adopted into "high class" families. The family story centered in Lisa Wingate's book describes five children and their parents who live on a river houseboat on inlet to Mississippi River. They are close to lowest of socio-economic status possible. But,they dearly care for one another, especially the children and their mother. At term with pregnancy for twins when the midwife is unable to deliver the mother, the midwife insists the father take her to a hospital. They are told the twins do not survive, but the mother does. When the mother and father return to their houseboat the other five children have been stolen by the authorities. How the children survive their existence under the ugly supervisor, Miss Tann, their separate adoptions and how they manage to regain contact with each other is an unbelievable story. Andy was not stopped until 1950."

Before We Were Yours A Novel Audible Audio Edition Lisa Wingate Emily Rankin Catherine Taber Random House Audio Books Reviews

  • I wasn't familiar with Lisa Wingate's books before I read "Before We Were Yours" but I'll be looking for others now that I've read it. I was drawn fully into the story, set in both the 1930s and present day. It follows the story of the Foss children in the '30s and Avery Stafford in present day, and brings to light a horrifying and shameful real-life scandal.

From the '30s to 1950, a woman named Georgia Tann, who ran the (Memphis) Tennessee Children's Home Society, stole poor children from their families and newborn babies from single mothers and sold them to celebrities, politicians and others who could afford them. It was all done under the guise of helping orphaned and abandoned children find good homes, but it was actually human trafficking.

Avery Stafford finds a puzzling photograph that leads her into an ever more confusing story of secrets and lies inside her upright, respected family. Along the way, she starts to question the man her family has picked for her to marry and her expected role within the family. What follows is a heartwarming story of love, betrayal, memories and staying true to your heart. In addition to the well developed characters and background love story, I liked the realistic view into the 1930s.

I really enjoyed this book and learned a lot about a dark time in our history, when being poor was enough to have a family ripped apart forever.
  • The Tennessee Children's Home run by Georgia Tann did exist for decades. The stories of children whisked away from poor parents, as they walked to school, were born in hospitals, played on their front porches, is a sad tale of the subterfuge used by this woman who made millions on "adoption fees". In many cases, the children were adopted by wealthy parents, satisfied by their obtaining the child they had so wanted. But, there were others, who disappeared forever, were abused in the children's home, while waiting for a home, or more likely, waiting to go back home to their birth families. Few adoptive parents knew about these terrible conditions, nor did the state, nor the birth families, who were left wondering what happened to their children.

This novel takes the facts and the recounted stories of the children who later were able to locate family members, when the documents were unsealed in 1995 (the home was closed in 1950). Lisa Wingate weaves a plausible story of a group of siblings caught up in this scheme. It is heart breaking to ponder, but presents a real situation that occurred in our country. Read this, along with "The Orphan Train", to get a sense of how fortunate you may be.
  • This was one of the hardest books I have ever read. The subject matter is disturbing and unforgettable. It is especially compelling because it is based on something that really happened. That being said, it was well-written and very hard to put down. I appreciated the uplifting ending as it somewhat mollifies the agony of the subject matter.
  • This is the first book I've ever read by Lisa Wingate, but having read it I will search through her other titles. It was an excellent book! The subject matter was hard, and sad at times, as I knew it would be before starting. I could not put it down because I had to find out how the story ended. It was a glorious book, I'm happy that I read it!

A rigorous case for the primacy of mind in nature, from philosophy to neuroscience, psychology and physics. The Idea of the World offers a grounded alternative to the frenzy of unrestrained abstractions and unexamined assumptions in philosophy and science today. This book examines what can be learned about the nature of reality based on conceptual parsimony, straightforward logic and empirical evidence from fields as diverse as physics and neuroscience. It compiles an overarching case for idealism - the notion that reality is essentially mental - from ten original articles the author has previously published in leading academic journals. The case begins with an exposition of the logical fallacies and internal contradictions of the reigning physicalist ontology and its popular alternatives, such as bottom-up panpsychism. It then advances a compelling formulation of idealism that elegantly makes sense of - and reconciles - classical and quantum worlds. The main objections to idealism are systematically refuted and empirical evidence is reviewed that corroborates the formulation presented here. The book closes with an analysis of the hidden psychological motivations behind mainstream physicalism and the implications of idealism for the way we relate to the world.

"With "The Idea of the World", Bernardo Kastrup has not only penned the first full-fledged masterstroke in the long overdue take down of the still reigning Materialist world view, he has also outlined a rigorously coherent case for the legitimacy and need for a New Idealism, a new ontological paradigm befitting of the 21st Century and beyond. Oh, and he also solves (or rather, dismantles) the "hard problem of consciousness" in this book as well. A Must Read!"

The Idea of the World A MultiDisciplinary Argument for the Mental Nature of Reality Bernardo Kastrup 9781785357398 Books Reviews

  • I admit I stopped reading this book after about 70 pages. Why? Because it was obviously going off the rails, like so many other similar explanations of the nature of reality. The ability to make assumptions endures even when a person bases their whole argument on not making unprovable assumptions.

The assumption the author rightly identifies as the downfall of materialism (which he calls physicalism) is that the material universe actually exists. To anyone who can perform rational thinking (except, perhaps, most scientists), it is clear that there is no absolute proof the material universe exists. As the author states, all we have is our experience to go on. It tells us that the material universe exists, but it can never offer direct contact with any material universe.

Whether or not the material universe actually exists, the idea that it exists is an assumption we make. It's a valuable assumption as it leads to all kinds of technological progress. But we need to agree it is not provable. It is just useful.

So far, the author is on track. However, then the author tells us that his philosophy of reality is going to explain the existence of multiple consciousnesses. That is, it will explain why "we" all inhabit the same universe. The existence of other consciousnesses is just as unprovable as the existence of the material universe. Just as we have no direct access to any material universe, we have no direct access to any other consciousness.

Having assumed the existence of these countless other minds, the author creates a logical explanation for them According to him, the universe is one consciousness with the psychological disorder of dissociation. That is, the universe is nuts.

Attempting to explicate this strange behavior of the universe becomes the author's "hard problem", akin to the hard problem of materialists explaining the existence of consciousness.

I don't understand what the author means when he say this one consciousness is the entire universe. Though I might ask, What universe? You just said the material universe does not exist.

I will add one more problem with the author's philosophy. He rightly says that the material universe is an idea, not a thing. It is a concept. But he goes on to talk about the basic "substrate" of consciousness, the mind. Really? And is "the mind" something other than a concept itself? If there is no material universe, then there is also no mind.

As Zen adepts have said, "if you see the Buddha walking down the road, kill the Buddha". Which means, Buddha is a concept too. Unfortunately everything is a concept, including every philosophy ever invented. All are concepts. Perhaps useful, some of them. Perhaps fun to play with. But explaining nothing about the true nature of reality.

Unfortunately, we are stuck in experience. It is all we have. We will never get out. And we can never understand how or why it exists.

I gave this book 5 stars because it is a first step in breaking the frozen waters of scientific dogma. One day, thanks to this book and others, the prevailing paradigm will indeed be that the material universe does not exist. Alas, a generation or two of scientists are going to have to move on from the material universe before that happens. But it will happen.
  • Critically important topics dissected with razor-sharp precision. Kastrup is such a clear thinker, and the ideas he espouses deserve much more mainstream recognition than they currently get. It will be fascinating to see if physicalists can generate compelling rebuttals while taking into account the totality of Kastrup’s meticulously-constructed case.
  • Dr. Bernardo Kastup’s book “The Idea of the World” is a work that ties together several of his previous papers into one very strong and coherent defense of idealism. Dr. Kastrup not only presents a powerful argument for idealism, but also presents the most prevalent arguments against the idealist ontology and takes them on one at a time. Kastrup is a very clear thinker and articulate communicator who carefully chooses his words and allegories to make his case. This could be one of the greatest works of philosophy in our generation and is sure to persuade a reexamination of our fundamental assumptions about reality.
  • With "The Idea of the World", Bernardo Kastrup has not only penned the first full-fledged masterstroke in the long overdue take down of the still reigning Materialist world view, he has also outlined a rigorously coherent case for the legitimacy and need for a New Idealism, a new ontological paradigm befitting of the 21st Century and beyond. Oh, and he also solves (or rather, dismantles) the "hard problem of consciousness" in this book as well. A Must Read!
  • It's been a strange trip, to travel through Bernardo Kastrup's idea of the world. Along with many familiar views turned somewhat askew, I encountered a few new ones. In several cases -- "Relational Quantum Mechanics," "Idealism," "Berkeley," "Dualism" -- I found SEP articles helpful backgrounders, though even then pulling them in line with the text was a somewhat strenuous gymnastic. But I soldiered on, and think I grasped the broad outlines if not many of the details of Bernardo's new adventure in ontological idealism. It is an unforgettable vision for sure.

With the logical progression and force of the argument, there is one overarching perspective which may be overlooked much of the majestic tapestry woven together here is largely speculative. Kastrup is open about this. For example, about his presentation of relational quantum mechanics he declares, "The interpretation suggested above shall remain a matter of philosophical speculation until somebody writes down the wave function for the thoughts of a conscious human being (r) and formalizes the interaction dynamics between it and ψ." Did you get it? A philosophical speculation. But a grand one, and quite plausible, or at least an intuitively satisfying foundation for building a view that reality is pure mind.

Making everything mental, it's an exhilarating adventure of the mind as we know it. Take the dive, plunge in, explore the way everything may be different than we ordinarily think.
  • I am enjoying and recommend this book! It addresses the fundamentality of predictions and observations in terms of "epistemic confidence", without taking "human thoughts" and "mind" for granted; so where I believe we might qualify the general premise as "mind", we can remain certain that the author is on target in his comparisons.
  • I don't completely agree with Kastrup's arguments for idealism but his case is compelling and difficult to refute.

Anyone who seriously thinks about consciousness should read the book.

This interdisciplinary, themed anthology focuses on the depiction of immigrants in cartoons, comics, and graphic novels across diverse cultures and time periods, as they navigate new socio-political milieux. It seeks to interrogate how immigration is portrayed in comics and how the "immigrant" was an indispensable and vital trope to the development of the comics medium in the twentieth century.

New York Times Book Review 10 Best Books of 2018

A New York Times Notable Book

The #1 New York Times bestseller.

A brilliant and brave investigation into the medical and scientific revolution taking place around psychedelic drugs--and the spellbinding story of his own life-changing psychedelic experiences

When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third. Thus began a singular adventure into various altered states of consciousness, along with a dive deep into both the latest brain science and the thriving underground community of psychedelic therapists. Pollan sifts the historical record to separate the truth about these mysterious drugs from the myths that have surrounded them since the 1960s, when a handful of psychedelic evangelists inadvertently catalyzed a powerful backlash against what was then a promising field of research.

A unique and elegant blend of science, memoir, travel writing, history, and medicine, How to Change Your Mind is a triumph of participatory journalism. By turns dazzling and edifying, it is the gripping account of a journey to an exciting and unexpected new frontier in our understanding of the mind, the self, and our place in the world. The true subject of Pollan's "mental travelogue" is not just psychedelic drugs but also the eternal puzzle of human consciousness and how, in a world that offers us both suffering and joy, we can do our best to be fully present and find meaning in our lives.

"Last night I finished reading Michael Pollan's latest book, How to Change Your Mind - What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence (Penguin Press, 2018). I'd ordered the book pre-publication, so they sent it to me on the day of its release. I'd been happily anticipating the book as I've admired Pollan's previous works very much. His journalism has long dealt with 'Gaia-related' topics and his even-handed, well written and researched presentations have always included the aspects of conciousness at their core. I can unhesitatingly recommend this volume. He presents both a history of modern (1950-70s) 'psychedelic' research studies & explorations and a current report of the newly resumed studies in the many uses of entheogens. This includes both overviews of clinical studies, practices of 'shamanic traditions', and his own personal experiences. I'm sure you'd recognize the names of many of the principle players & circumstances he describes; old friends of psychedelic literature & exploration.

I think it's great that such a thoughtful book would be offered by this well-accomplished 'mainstream' journalist. This can only lend more weight to the general public & our authorities to developing a less reactionary and more sane view of these sacramental benefactors. Pollan, like all of us, is very concerned about how we can continue to sustainably exist as individuals, a society, a species. He sees that there may be some allies, close to hand, that have long been available to help us adjust our perceptions and continue on an evolutionary journey, to grow & to expand rather than self-destructing. "How to change your mind" is a well chosen phrase, an observation that often our 'problems' are ones of perception rather than actual unyielding obstacles. Good work, good book, good gracious."

How to Change Your Mind What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness Dying Addiction Depression and Transcendence Michael Pollan 9781594204227 Books Reviews

  • My wife Ivy and I have been avid readers of Michael Pollan's previous articles and book-length works especially those involving healthful eating and the food industry. By way of background I am a forty-something surgeon and my wife is an author and blogger with MS who has on occasion had to cope with condition-related mood issues. Without having done much research into the psychedelics other than to ensure they are indeed medically safe (as this book discusses in more detail) a couple years back we participated in several overseas guided ayahuasca (a psychedelic plant mentioned in How to Change Your Mind) sessions. Our experiences as a couple participating both to obtain hoped-for medical benefits and for, in my case, the "betterment of well people" to quote Pollan's book have been discussed online and mirror the experiences described by Mr. Pollan and by the numerous academic professionals, researchers, and patients interviewed throughout this journalistic masterpiece. To describe this further is beyond the scope of my review but we can vouch that this book is one hundred percent serious journalism and that research investment into the study of psychedelics as medications for treatment resistant psychiatric conditions and as spiritual aids for the betterment of humanity is very much needed and is well underway as described in detail in Pollan's book.

As for the prosaic the book is over 400 pages and written at an advanced level and will engage the most curious of readers. The book is organized into six chapters. The first is a broad introduction to the topic of psychedelics and the second discusses psychedelic mushrooms which possess an active ingredient that is the topic of many current-era human research studies. The third chapter discusses the first wave of psychedelic research (I had no idea that in the 1950's these substances were academically studied and thought to hold great promise only for that research to be practically shut down as a result of the political upheaval of the late 60's) and is of great interest to anyone interested in the history of these substances even if one has no interest in their pharmacological effects. The fourth discusses the author's own personal experiences as a middle-aged adult with the psychedelics and he is spot-on with his fascinating first person descriptions of the experience. Finally, chapters five and six discuss current research, expected medical benefits and benefits to the well-person, the neuroscience behind the actual function of psychedelics in the brain, and proposed solutions for safely distributing the psychedelics to persons who could benefit.

For many readers this book will "change your mind" about the loaded term "psychedelic" and will open you up to at least the possibility the world could be a better place if these substances could be studied with as much zeal as are other pharmaceuticals and could be offered safely for the benefit of the millions of persons worldwide suffering from conditions related to dysfunction of the mind.
  • This book is many things. It's entertaining to say the least. Pollan takes the heavily loaded topic of psychedelics (LSD and psilocybin) and analyzes it from the compelling perspective of a 63-year-old journalist who's "not at all sure he's ever had a single 'spiritually significant' experience." Every few pages, I stopped to wonder how this old guy (sorry, Mr. Pollan) is so much more fluent on the topic than me, a 25-year-old hippie vegan.

But that's exactly what makes the book so important. Psychedelics don't need to be locked in a role as mind-expanding recreational drugs for young hippies. Research suggests they can play an important role in combating mental illness, and if properly regulated, provide psychological benefits for "the betterment of well people." If there's anyone best suited to help society move past the 1960s and take a fresh, honest look at psychedelics, it's Michael Pollan.

Also consider listening to his podcast with Tim Ferriss about this new book.
  • I was thrilled to learn that Michael Pollan was going to tackle the subject of psychedelics and the promising research being done by MAPS and Johns Hopkins, among others. I love his previous books. He is a skilled writer and does such a great job explaining complex topics. I got my copy one day early (thank you to 's efficient delivery service). I am only partially through it, and so far it is fascinating. His recent appearance on Tim Ferriss' podcast was tremendous and is a great introduction to the book and his careful handling of the topic. The potential value for the use of psychedelics in mental health treatment must be fully explored. I hope this book helps further that exploration.

In the '60s and '70s, America's music scene was marked by raucous excess, reflected in the tragic overdoses of young superstars such as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. At the same time, the uplifting harmonies and sunny lyrics that propelled Karen Carpenter and her brother, Richard, to international fame belied a different sort of tragedy—the underconsumption that led to Karen's death at age thirty-two from the effects of an eating disorder.

In Why Karen Carpenter Matters, Karen Tongson (whose Filipino musician parents named her after the pop icon) interweaves the story of the singer’s rise to fame with her own trans-Pacific journey between the Philippines—where imitations of American pop styles flourished—and Karen Carpenter’s home ground of Southern California. Tongson reveals why the Carpenters' chart-topping, seemingly whitewashed musical fantasies of "normal love" can now have profound significance for her—as well as for other people of color, LGBT+ communities, and anyone outside the mainstream culture usually associated with Karen Carpenter’s legacy. This hybrid of memoir and biography excavates the destructive perfectionism at the root of the Carpenters’ sound, while finding the beauty in the singer's all too brief life.
